Original Poetry...

So, I've posted that I'm going to share some of my original writing.  Well, this is a short little poem from many moons ago...10th grade Creative Writing, with Mrs. Schneider.  It's because of that class that I listen to instrumental music when I write, and it's probably the reason I feel any confidence in my writing at all.

Anyway...(be nice to me in comments, please) here goes:

"Honey Garden"

Rose petals falling delicately into
an autumn pool, deliriously worshipping
a diamond goddess of chocolate beauty, under a gorgeous
mist of a dream of a honey garden.

Things are A-Changin'

The last few months have been all about making some changes to my life, mostly stuff that just makes me feel more like an adult (::gulp::).  One of things I've decided to do is begin writing again.  Thankfully my mister is on board and fully supportive of my decision.  My family and friends are also pushing me towards my goal of becoming a published author; I have a great support system and without them I would be nothing.

I've always been drawn to reading and writing; my first creative writing experience happened in my freshman year of high school.  My English teacher, Mrs. C, had the class write short stories that were to be published in a class anthology (which I still have to this day).  That year (and the rest of my high school career, if I'm being totally honest) was pretty much consumed by all things Lord of the Rings (and Harry Potter and Dark Hunter).  My short story was about Legolas from LotR and an original character, and was only two pages long; my first creative writing piece was fan fiction and I had no idea.  Not gonna lie, I think that's awesome, given how much fan fiction I have read since I discovered it, and that one of the authors I read got her start from writing fan fiction.

Anyway...last month I joined NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) and even though I came nowhere near the goal of 50k words, I got my first novel started and that's the first step.  Just over a month later I finally actually plotted out the novel, because I realized that I just can't write without an idea of what's going to happen along the way to the ending.

Wait...I'm skipping ahead.  Before I get too far let me give you some background: I've been doing some assistant work for another author, Diana Marik (her work is fabulous!  You should check out her website: www.dianamarik.com), and we traveled to RWA (as some of my older posts have mentioned).  Also mentioned in those posts was going to the Book Obsessed Chicks dinner down in San Antonio, and meeting the amazing show runner, Kim.  This chick is awesome and I adore her.  A few months later I offered to do a book review for her Book Obsessed Chicks blog (http://book-obsessed-chicks.blogspot.com) and have decided that I love to read and review books for authors.  It's great feeling to give feedback on the stories I love; I've never thought to post reviews until I met Kim and starting meeting other authors through her.  I'll post links to her blog for any reviews I do for her; go check out her site, it's as awesome as she is! <3

So I've figured out that reviewing other books is another passion I have, and I've decided that I'm going to include some reviews on this blog, as well as updates on my own journey to becoming a published author and (::gulp::) original work.

Anywho...this was just a long-winded post that's basically to inform ya'll (my Texas husband has rubbed off on me apparently) that pretty soon you'll see book reviews posted here :)  And I'm going to find a way to set up a gadget of some sort that will allow authors to submit requests directly from the blog.

PS - I forgot to mention...I'm officially an RWA member!!  Squeeee!!!

RWA 2014

So, this blog post is really late, considering it's almost October and the Conference was at the end of July.  August and September were crazy busy for me in my personal life and I'm finally getting back to my journey to becoming a published author.

RWA 2014 was an amazing experience, and I met so many wonderful authors and agents who were nothing but supportive and encouraging.  The Literacy Signing was like heaven for me -- meeting authors in their element and talking to them about their books.  I definitely fangirled a few times, and hope to see all of those lovely ladies again.  I was very lucky to be invited to the BOC (Book Obsessed Chicks) dinner, and had the opportunity to hang out with some great ladies.  I was also lucky enough to attend the FF&P Chapter party, and had such a wonderful time surrounded by great people.  Dinner was delicious and the dancing lasted all hours.

I can't wait to attend the RWA Conference next year in NYC, next time as an official RWA member. Hopefully with a novel ready to be published.

Just a Taste...

Okay, so it's 10:41pm & I have a flight at 8am tomorrow, so this is going to be as brief as I can make it.  RWA 2014 was an amazing experience (even if the heat in San Antonio was definitely trying to kill me), and I can't wait to go to the Conference in NYC in 2015.  I met so many wonderful women, all of whom were supportive & encouraging about my desire to write.  That in itself was surprising (although I don't know why, when it's literally a conference about writers, for writers, attended by writers).  Anyway, I'm going to write a longer post about my experience, but I just wanted to express how grateful I am for the opportunity to have even been in the company of these amazing & talented women.

I'm so excited to get back home & start writing and just delve into this exciting new career opportunity, BUT I'm definitely going to miss the amount of amazingly fluffy pillows (I requested an extra 3 for a total of 6 or 7 pillows) & the super soft bed & snuggly comforter.  Hands down the most comfortable hotel bed I've ever stayed in.  Maybe I can convince my mister to let me buy about 6 small fluffy pillows for my side of the bed?  Keep your fingers crossed for me!

And now...sleep.

PS - I'm also definitely going to miss WhataBurger.  Best.burgers.ever.

Intro I Guess

I decided recently that I wanted to start writing again, and work towards making a career out of it.  There will be a ton of small steps before anything major happens but I'm just thrilled I made the decision; it's incredibly nerve-wracking at the same time.  Thankfully I work a regular 8-5 job M-F, so I have the evenings and weekends to write (and spend as much time as I can with my hubby, also known as "my mister.")

Anyway - this blog is going to be dedicated to my journey towards becoming an author & will feature anything I come across that's helpful to other writers and readers, and I may even be brave enough to post some of my own original work (::gulp::).
